IVHQ volunteers on Ovalau Island experience the real Fiji and gain a rich understanding of the Fijian culture and customs by living rurally and interacting daily with locals. Volunteers on Ovalau Island can assist on projects in Turtle Conservation or Organic Farming.
Established in 2007, International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) has grown to become the world’s leading volunteer travel company providing affordable, safe and responsible volunteer programs in Fiji and in over 25 countries around the world. The IVHQ Fiji Program is located on the island of Ovalau, near the UNESCO World Heritage town, Levuka, as well as on the mainland in Suva. IVHQ Volunteer placements are situated in and around these two locations. IVHQ volunteer projects available in Fiji include Turtle Conservation, Organic Farming, Construction and Renovation, Sports Education, Teaching and Kindergarten.

The Island of Ovalau is off the north east coast off the mainland of Viti Levu. On Ovalau Island volunteers are able to contribute to the conservation efforts at the Turtle Conservation project or in Organic Farming. Ovalau is scattered with small local communities and volunteers here have the chance to be a part of a rural village and experience the real Fijian way of life. Not many tourists visit Ovalau and the volunteer contribution to these projects and the community in which they are based cannot be overstated. Ovalau Volunteer Projects

Volunteers on Ovalau Island assist on projects in conservation on the Turtle Conservation project or in Organic Farming. The Turtle Conservation project is in early stages and volunteers will contribute to its development while working alongside a local team to help protect the endangered sea turtles of Fiji. Volunteers tasks include feeding, cleaning and caring for the the turtles and hatching eggs. and The Organic Farming project is another hands on project where volunteers will be in charge of their own plot and learn from local farmers about their deep knowledge of organic farming and the land. Volunteers tasks include weeding, digging, planting and volunteers also have the opportunity to teach students about having their own land. Ovalau Volunteer Orientation

Volunteers on all IVHQ volunteer programs participate on an orientation which is hosted by our Fiji team in Suva. Orientation begins on the first day of your volunteer program and runs for the first five days. Orientation covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program and your visit to Fiji. Included in the orientation is an introduction to Fiji, Fiji culture and customs, program rules and expectations, safety, volunteer weekend travel opportunities and the last two days of orientation include an introduction to the volunteer project and placement. Orientation is the perfect opportunity to get to know and meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing.

Ovalau Volunteer Meals and Accommodation

Volunteers on Ovalau are accommodated in traditionally thatched Fijian-style bures (bungalows), which are located in close proximity to the placement locations. Living conditions are basic but comfortable and volunteers can expect to share a bure with 6 to 8 other volunteers of the same sex. Private rooms are available upon request. Meals are served at the volunteer house 3 times per day during the week; breakfast and dinner only are served during the weekends. Meals vary depending on seasonal availability but volunteers can expect dinner and lunch meals to include miti fish, chow mein, kokoda, fresh tropical fruits, stews, soups and curries. Breakfast options include scrambled eggs and toast, fried bananas, pancakes, coffee and tea.

As part of the IVHQ volunteer program fee, volunteers in Fiji are provided with an airport pick-up, orientation, program supervision, accommodation and meals during the volunteer program period. Visit our website for more details about how to volunteer in Fiji with IVHQ.
