Rainbow Reef Diving

The Rainbow Reef is located off the southern coastline of Vanua Levu, Taveuni Fiji.
The waters that divide the two islands is called the Somosomo Strait and the
ocean currents passing through the strait bring rich nutrients. This is the
reason why the coral and the marine life in this area is so spectacular.

Divers will experience extraordinary formations of hard and soft corals and an
abundance of fish life including anemonefish, Maori Wrasse, lionfish, reef sharks,
rays, turtles and much, much more.

With a variety of deep wall drop offs and shallow drift dives, there is something here for everyone.

Turtles Diving

Turtles are known as one of the most oldest and the smartest animals in the history of our planet Earth.
The most porpular ones like that of the Green Turtle, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley and Leatherbacks. Aquatic turtles are bigger than terra firma cousin, plus they have a streamlined shell and non-retractable head and limbs.
These limbs are only used to swim and not for crawling.

They use their limbs to swim not to crawl, hence arre in action a great deal of the time; coloration ranges from greenish-brown, olive-green, even yellow to black.

Some turtles are greenish-brown, some are olive-green, and some even yellow or black. Did you know that the green turtles are vegetarian? They eat grass and algae, and the Olive Ridley eat mollusks, squids, jellyfish, tunicates and some crabs.

It is also said that the best time to go turtle diving is during there mating season. It is alluring to watch how
the group of male turtles court the single female turtle. After several weeks turtle eggs can be found in small sand nests.

It is an amazing fact that little turtles are oriented to the waters thanks to moon light and sea conditions.
When the nighttime beach is suddenly lit with a torch or beam of light it is not a surprise to find a small turtle after hatching near a bar of terrace rather than in the sea.
That is why some of the juvenile hatchings die as they loose there inbuilt sense of direction or get eaten on their way to the sea.

So if you think you want to go turtle diving, be sure to go during turtle mating season which is sometime in late October to early March, and the peaking in December.
But remember as that first moments are as important as it should be
conducted in slow and small movements. One must not get too excited, as then you will be able to see many types of turtles swimming together at the same time and will not swim away rapidly. It is a super spectable experience to watch the turtles in great pleasure.

To wetsuit or not to wetsuit??

I have never been diving in the North Pole and probably never will too….brrbrrbrr (teeth chattering)…COLD!!! And probably would need 3 of those thermal just to keep warm…lol. Come-on……

I spent a good majority of my life living in the tropics.
That’s the beauty of diving in Fiji you really don’t need a wetsuit to dive, unless you don’t want to work on tan on the boat ride back? Water temperature is ideal for diving without the suit, temperatures range from 80-83 degrees Fahrenheit or 26-28 degrees Celsius, depending on how deep you dive. What more could you want? Warm waters, white sandy beaches, beautiful sunsets, friendly people…..the list goes on and on.
Me…No wetsuit.
