Diving after a storm

Hurricane Thomas: Mostly a near miss.
If you’ve been following this blog recently, you were kept abreast of the trials and tribulations of Hurricane Tomas. Fortunately it did not hit the major population centres but it did do some significant damage to a section of some of the more outer lying islands on the distant Eastern side of Viti Levu. Property damage to many villages was high but loss of life was thankfully at a minimum. Resorts and the tourism industry faced very little problems and they are already back to business as usual.
Diving after a storm brings about some unique circumstances that many divers quickly appreciate. It’s kinda like Nature’s version of an archaeological dig. Immediately after a powerful storm, visibility is not generally at its best. That fact cannot be helped. What does seem to happen often is that fish seem to be out in greater abundance looking for food. Things get turned over and some things magically appear while other things get washed under the sandbanks.
This time often brings out the bigger predatory creatures roam around in packs as well and they enjoy the extra snacks, for sure. Water often can cool down as much as 4 to 5 degrees n some spots although not usually that much in the warm pacific waters. The reefs seem to become a nursery of marine life and occasionally the sand resembles the tropics version of snow.
So there you have it, Fiji diving after a big storm. Once again, proving that diving in Fiji is a can’t lose proposition.

Oscar Winning Director: Life Altering Diving Experience in Fiji

DiveMe PackagesKathryn Bigelow, winner of the 2009 Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture for The Hurt Locker might be aptly described as an adrenaline junkie. The 58 year old mountain climbing, fitness fanatic is also an avid horse rider. She has directed films about vampires, bank robbing surfers, motorcycle bikes, Russian nuclear submarines and of course, military bomb diffusers in The Hurt Locker to mention just a few of her eight films.
Well it turns out Ms Bigelow also had a truly scary experience in Fiji many years back. She once lost her weight belt while diving and nearly died. We don’t know the circumstances surrounding it, but judging by the characters that she writes about and direct… we’re sure she kept her cool…. and who knows, maybe that experience had a part in what has made her such an real life female action hero. Well, we’re all sure glad that she made her way to the surface to embark on all those other great adventures.
