So you came to Fiji to dive! Good decision folks – we have the best diving in the world.
And then the unimaginable in Fiji happens. The weather decides to chuck a wobbly and diving is off the calendar for a day. Or the even more unimaginable, you celebrated your wife’s birthday the night before and had a few drinks and diving looks a ‘wee bit too hard.’ So the inevitable conversation turns to – “What are we going to do now?”
Let us not panic people. Fiji is abuzz with things to do that are just as interesting, enjoyable, fascinating and exciting. Yeah right you say. We know you’re a diver and nothing can match that but give us a break and we’ll show you.
Of course ‘Extra curricular activities’ also depend on which region you’re in. You can’t do a heck of a lot of shopping if you’re in Kadavu and you can’t work-out in a gym if you’re in a backpackers in the Yasawas.

Shopping
It all depends on what you are looking for. If you’re after high-end clothing, handicrafts, perfumes, cosmetics etc then Suva, Nadi, Sigatoka and Denarau Island are the places to go.
Mats, sulus, baskets and t-shirts are readily available in most shopping centres. Or pop in to one of the local markets where you can also buy handicrafts (at much reduced rates than the shops), wonderful Indian spices, wood carvings, plain and ornamental tanoas (the wooden bowl that kava is served from), island jewellery and fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables.
A wide range of electrical items such as stereos, iPods, photographic equipment and VCRs are available with bargaining for these items usually OK. Value Added Tax (VAT) of 12.5% is applicable on all items.
Please resist purchasing any items made from endangered species such as turtles and also from buying shells remembering that the animal that lived inside this was killed for the shell.

Kayaking
River and Sea kayaking is a natural activity for divers who are active individuals. Most resorts have kayaks available for guests to use and are usually included in the FOC, non-motorised activities.
Sea kayaking is available in the majority of regions but particularly around Viti Levu where sea kayaking guided tours are available together with kayaking through gorges and rivers. Guided tours can be arranged which include a stop-over in a village for a night.
This gives you the great opportunity of a double bonus – kayaking and having a first-hand experience of Fijian lifestyle and culture.
Sea kayak amid turquoise blue waters ... snorkel incredible coral reefs ... or kayak through a lush mangrove forest.
