Now a few more words to attempt to describe an event that is otherwise indescribable. You will catch a 20 minute or so boat ride at 9am from Wayalailai Resort (the event organisers) or one of its neighbor resorts. You will meet up with 50 or so of your new victim friends (just kidding) to what can best be described as a brilliantly coloured underwater amphitheatre made up of beautiful coral. It is deep below, but not too deep, probably about 12 metres at the deepest section and then almost on cue, the sharks arrive through one of two entryways into the ‘coral in the round’.
You are probably wondering what type of sharks and how big they are. Both are good questions, and you will come to learn the answers. Actually the sharks are all reef sharks, black tip reef sharks, Carcharhinus melanopterus, and the biggest looks to be barely more than 1.5 metres.
There generally seems to be around a half dozen sharks that will make an appearance at any one time but who really knows if they are the marquee actors or just understudies filling in for the lead sharks who may occasionally grow weary of entertaining and scaring heaps of long distance tourists on a regular basis.
One would imagine that inflicting terrorizing fear to funny faced snorkelers above can be a tiring business. No matter, whichever sharks show up, you will not be left disappointed.
