Dining in Levuka

There are several eating places in Levuka that you shouldn’t miss whether for good food or ambience. When partaking of a meal, ambience and atmosphere add another dimension to the pleasure, just as good companions do, and Levuka has heaps of it.

Kim’s Paak Kum Loong Restaurant

Wander down the main street and you will find Kim’s Paak Kum Loong, Restaurant one of Levuka’s most popular restaurants. Kim’s has a full breakfast and the dinner menu includes Chinese dishes. Prices are reasonable and beer is available.

There are also Fijian treats to be had and six vegetarian choices. The ambience created by eating on the upstairs verandah looking directly over the ocean is extremely pleasant and relaxing.  All in all, very good for the soul as well as the palate.

The Whale’s Tale Restaurant

Located about half way down the main street, The Whale’s Tale is a delightful little restaurant with lots of whaling memorabilia here and there, testimony to the fact that Levuka was once a stopover for whalers. It makes for great atmosphere and fascinating discussion topics with the locals.

The food is great and is cooked fresh right in front of you from the open plan kitchen. Can you believe lobster for $12.50? If that doesn’t start a run on Levuka I don’t know what will. Beer and wine is also available and you can BYO. Round it all off with a cup of perked coffee and you’re ‘set’.

The Royal Hotel

Levuka’s oldest establishment has a great old world atmosphere. Dine amidst lovely old brass planters, high backed colonial cane chairs and fine old timber furniture that has stood the test of time.  Whilst waiting, immerse yourself in aged newspaper cuttings preserved in folders that bring back the heady days of Levuka’s ribald past.

The staff are friendly and pleasant and while the menu is limited it is very reasonably priced with beer also available. For a meal with a definite old world elegant ambience try this – it’s lovely.
