NOT everyone can afford travelling all the way from the United States to have a dream wedding here in Fiji.
However, Brad and Amanda Horn did the most extraordinary thing, they made sure guests at their Goldhill Hotel wedding in Virginia, Nevada contributed to their airfare to Fiji for their honeymoon.
“I’ve wanted to come to Fiji for several years,” Amanda said.
“I’ve seen the pictures and I have read about the people being friendly, but it was so far away from the United States and I didn’t know anybody who had been there.
“I just thought that it was unique and I thought this was the furthest place I can go away to.
“And because it was expensive to travel here, when we got married last August, we asked our friends and family to contribute to our plane tickets.
“We didn’t want plates, bowls; we wanted to travel to Fiji.
“Now we’re able to travel around and do whatever we want.”
Amanda was so obsessed with Fiji that she kept refilling a bottle of FIJI Water until she and her husband had saved enough money to come to Fiji.
Amanda is a journalism student while Brad works as a journalist for CBS News.
The couple spent their honeymoon on Denarau Island and visited families in Nadi.
They also visited the Fiji Times Limited office in Suva during a short trip to the capital city last week.
“Most of our time here was spent meeting people and we loved every minute we spent with families and children,” Amanda said.
“We went to church last Sunday at the Abundant Life Church; we were at the English service and did Bible study, and there was beautiful music and singing.
“We went back to a home that belonged to this lady who was in the choir; we had lunch there and just hung out with the family.
“The food is amazing here; we love the vegetable curry, which we bought for $1.
“We also wanted to see another side of Suva and the urban music culture the kids were creating; we can say that these kids were amazing.
“Our stay here has been a dream come true.
“I would recommend anyone to come to Fiji for any reason.”
The couple met in silence during a Buddhism retreat two years ago where participants were expected to meditate for 36 hours.
“We never really talked much,” Brad said of how he knew Amanda was the one.
“We sat on cushions and we felt that our body were coming together and we felt like crying in the end.
“So we embraced for 15 minutes and after two weeks, she moved into my house.
“Nine months later, I asked someone to teach me French so that I could ask her to marry me in French.
“After that we went to another retreat, another 36 hours meditation and then I asked her to marry me.
“She did say yes, and I am very lucky and visiting Fiji with her made our union very special.”
According to Brad, coming to Fiji had not only been a romantic experience but enjoyable in a relaxing kind of way.
“We didn’t need to adjust, we just got here and we were on Fiji time,” he said.
“We take walks on the beach together and just chill.
“Amanda knows so much about living on Fiji time but for me as a journalist, it is really hard to adjust.
“Now I am used to the Fiji time and I haven’t thought about work since arriving into the country.”
